It is with much pleasure that we welcome you to retrace some of the steps of the early explorers of the picturesque town of American River before relaxing in one of our comfortable bedroom suites here at Le Geographe`. This stunning newly built home is situated on an elevated location providing perfect views of Pelican Lagoon and surrounding bushland which make Le Geographe` the ideal place to wind down, relax and enjoy a peaceful sleep before gearing up for another day on our beautiful island wonderland. The house is in close proximity to the jetty and other popular fishing spots, scenic walks and quality cafe`s and restaurants. As an alternative to dining out visit the local General Store for fresh meats and produce and bring it back for a 'cook-it- yourself' style meal on our guest BBQ. We allow our guests the freedom of self contained accommodation combined with having hosts on site if you require a little B&B style service, catering for one booking only at any time to ensure your privacy and enjoyment.
Our guests are greeted on arrival by hosts Scott and Maria who manage the property, they are more than happy to provide local knowledge and recommendations of the many wonderful things to see and do in the area and elsewhere around the island. THE HISTORY
The original Le Geographe` was the ship captained by the first French explorer of Kangaroo Island, Nicolas Baudin, in the 1800s. It is recorded that on 11th April 1802 he sailed his ship along the north side of the island charting the coastline for future navigators. It was not until the 2nd of January 1803 that Baudin returned to Kangaroo Island to survey the south coast - it was along this side of the island that Prospect Hill was discovered. After completing this task Captain Baudin and crew returned to the eastern end of the island where they explored land east of Cape Delambre, known as Kangaroo Head, and Antechamber Bay in search for edible wildlife and fresh water sources while they built a longboat from local timber. During this time a selection of animals and birds were captured alive and stored in cages aboard Le Geographe` in hope they would survive the arduous journey back to France.
